Steampunk How To – Steampunk Gloves

Posted by: ayiden   in Steampunk Accessories

Here’s a small tutorial from Threadbanger.com by one of their members, AuskaNova, with a How-To tutorial on making Steampunk gloves. With minimal work, you too can have a pretty amazing looking pair of gloves for your Steampunk outfit!

Youtube user EmmyLouAngel created this nifty little video showing off her Steampunk monocle goggles two years ago. The video, unfortunately doesn’t show any tutorials as to how these were created, but you can bet we’ll be attempting to contact her for some tutorials, because her work is amazing! Check out the video below!

We have a pretty nifty treat for you all today! Steampunk enthusiast, John Knight has developed a way to control Google Earth on his iPad with an actual globe. The secret is in the RFID tags placed upon the globe itself. The setup is still in the works, but it show’s some pretty innovative thinking on Knight’s part! Hopefully he can get this thing up and running smoothly, and eventually produce these globes! We’re looking at the creation of the Map Room for the 21st Century! Get your dirigibles and submarines prepped for these bad boys!

Steampunks Attending AFO

Posted by: ayiden   in Steampunk News

Speculative Minds will be attending AFO up in Orlando this year. If any of you Florida Steampunkers would like to meet up, and perhaps grab a drink, you should search me out! I’ll be attending all three days (will be there on Thursday as well to help friends set up a booth, but will not be dressed out). Just look for my top hat and goggles making their way through the crowds! Also, I’ll (if they turn out as well as I hope) be sporting a pair of striped pants put together from our striped pants guide over at this link here! So look out for me, and my massive array of modded Nerf guns and say “Hi!” Just no glomping allowed!

- Matthew Alexander
Navigator Extraordinaire

Garrett’s Note: I will not be attending so if you will be carrying a Nerf Gun as well, please shoot him the back of the head for me (from a comfortable distance, no unnecessary pain).

Steampunk Disney – The Mechanical Kingdom

Posted by: admin   in Steampunk News

Steampunk Disney - Mechanical Kingdom

Is Disney going steampunk?  It seems so.  Recently on the Disney blog, Project Manager Steven Miller (not of the Steve Miller band) has announced some new new things going on, particularly one called The Mechanical Kingdom. So far, all The Mechanical Kingdom has is a pin set that accompanies some stories.  We at SteampunkGuides.com and SpeculativeMinds.com are hopeing some other merchandise is in the works, along with maybe a section of Orlando Florida’s, The Magic Kingdom theme park.  Imagine a whole steampunk section of a Disney theme park!  You can be sure that if that happens, we’ll have it covered.  What we’re wondering is if this has anything to do with Epic Mickey, the new Disney/Mickey game on the Wii that has many steampunk elements. I guess we’ll see.  You can check out or pre-order Epic Mickey here.

Soulless By Gail Carriger
Title:
Author:
Gail Carriger
Genre:
Sci-fi/Horror/Comedy
Review By:
Carly “Cthulhu’s Delight” http://www.etsy.com/shop/CthulhusDelight
Synopsis:
Alexia Tarabotti is a swarthy, parasol-wielding, tea-drinking, treacle-tart loving spinster with a pension for poking her substantial nose where it otherwise does not belong. Making matters worse, she is also Italian. If that still were not enough, Alexia Tarabotti has no soul. Having just accidentally killed an oh-so-unmannerly vampire whom attacked her for no apparent reason, Alexia succeeds in setting the whole of the Supernatural population of Victorian London abash. With her ability to render Vampire and Werewolf alike back to a mortal state, everyone seems to be pointing the finger at her, especially what with a certain amount of Supernatural folk disappearing without a trace. With the help of a rather flamboyant Vampire rove and the rather impossible, rather Werewolf, and rather Scottish Lord Maccon, Alexia seeks to find answers.
Review:
Gail  Carriger’s Soulless was an absolutely fantastic read- a truly refreshing approach to the supernatural realm, complete with silly vampires, large and painfully Scottish werewolves, evil scientists, Parasols, and absolutely ridiculous hats, all blended with a simply splendid sprinkling of Steampunkery! Miss Carriger certainly spins a wonderful tale that kept me completely entranced. I absolutely loved her characters, and her writing style is quite pristine and enjoyable! She mixes just the right amount of comedy into the story to make you laugh, but teeter on the edge of your seat in suspense! Alexia is definitely a main character that is incredibly fun to follow. She is loud-mouthed, opinionated, and says the most outrageous things in the presence of esteemed company! I simply love how Miss Carriger takes a new approach to writing about Werewolves and Vampires. Lord Akeldama is quite ridiculous and keeps a gaggle of giggling boys about, while Lord Maccon, the Alpha wolf of the Woolsey pack, is abhorrently messy, loud, and secretly fancies Alexia. Throw in Alexia’s best friend, Miss Ivy Hisselpenny, who has a terrible habit of wearing the most abominable hats, and hilarity ensues! This book is a must read, for sure!

Steampunk How To – How To Tie A Cravat

Posted by: ayiden   in Other Guides

by IxDoxDeclare http://www.etsy.com/shop/IxDoxDeclare

One of the quintessential elements of early Victorian men’s costume is the Cravat. Technically it’s just another step in the evolution of the neck cloth to the modern day tie but in it’s heyday the way your cravat was tied could communicate volumes about who you were. There were thousands of different knots and innumerable ways to pin or adorn it. I’m going to go over my personal favorite knot for cravats.

Materials:

Cravat Tie (or rectangular piece of silk approx. 3.5 feet long and 9 inches wide)

Step one:

Flip your shirt collar up and button the top button.

Step two:
Image
Like when tying a normal tie drape it over your neck with one side longer then the other.

Step three:
Image
Begin tying the knot by bringing the longer side over the top of the shorter.

Step four:

Bring the longer piece under shorter one and up through making the knot.

Step five

Pull the knot tight.

Step six:

FINISHED!

You can style it anyway you want. I like to tuck it it into the gap between a few buttons and then hide it under a vest. Also adding a pin can make it fancier!

As a way to promote all artists and “Do-It Your Selfers” in the Steampunk community, we are pleased to announce our Featured Artist section! Each month, we will be spotlighting one artist; showing off their talents, and other creations. Each month, we will select the artist based on the steampunk guides they have submitted to us!

So how can you be picked? Just submit your steampunk guides to us! You will always be given credit for your Steampunk guides, and any personal website (Etsy included), that you would like to promote will be added to help promote your sales too! However, with the “Featured Artist” section, you will be given a chance to promote any other forms of art and work that you do, allowing us to help promote more then just your Steampunk works! This is an opportunity for you to get your name out into our growing community, and it’s completely free to you! So start making those guides and hopefully we’ll see you as our next Featured Artist!

Make sure you are following our guidelines when submitting your steampunk guides. For the right protocol, check out this post!

Captain Robert Brown of the steampunk band Abney Park is a huge Steampunk enthusiast.  A little while back he posted this video, which is a really simple DIY guide to making striped pants.  This can be done with Men’s pants OR Women’s pants.
